Unapologetically, Doe Deere

“I make makeup for girls and boys like me, who express themselves unapologetically. Lime Crime is freedom to be you!” – Doe Deere, CEO, and Founder of Lime Crime

Doe Deere is a beauty rebel leaving a bold sparkly mark on the cosmetics industry. Legally named Xenia Vorotova, Doe Deere, was born and raised in Russia before moving to the Big Apple (New York City) in 1998. She moved there when she was only seventeen years old in pursuit of being a musician. Her time playing music as part of a band was where she gained most of her knowledge of careers and marketing but she didn’t stop there. Alongside being an aspiring musician, she also majored in Fashion Design at FIT, giving her insight into the fashion world.

By 2008 Doe Deere had created her own fashion line and started selling online. She used herself as a model for her clothing and was in search of some bright makeup colors to complement her designs. When her findings failed her, she began creating her own. Her rebellious styles started to catch the attention of others but it wasn’t the product she had expected. They saw more passion in her makeup than the clothing. So she decided to sell eyeshadows, blush, glitter, primers, and fine brushes to start. What began as a DIY eBay store, launched a worldwide beauty brand called Lime Crime.

Now today, a native of Los Angeles with the title “Unicorn Queen” (as the unicorn is the cosmetics mascot), Doe Deere has successfully created, not only a line of beautifully crafted cosmetics but ones that are also cruelty-free certified and vegan. Her brand offers an array of eye-shadow palettes, loose pigments, rainbow-colored liquid liners, nail polish, glittery lip gloss and “criminally coveted” lipsticks that allow you to be “unapologetically you”.

Doe Deere has been named as one of the Top Inspiring Women Entrepreneurs by Self-Made Magazine and we can definitely see why. She has given a way for girls and boys to make a statement with makeup artistry by designing a rainbow of colors to dive into. Like the beauty line’s mascot, the unicorn, Lime Crime accentuates rare beauty, individuality, and compassion for life. Doe Deere is an inspiration for anyone to always be themselves and that it doesn’t matter where you come from, with big dreams and hard work, you can be anything your heart desires. Up close and candid with Malini Saba on her Stree initiative

Born and partly raised in South East Asia, not many people expected that Malini Saba would become the successful investor that she is today. Well, she has managed to prove everyone wrong, and what is even more impressive is that her journey, though tough, has been the most rewarding. Her first startups fell apart as a result of interference from powerful and corrupt individuals, but she did not mind starting all over again. She invested in PayPal and other digital based companies in Silicon Valley and when the information age truly set in, she reaped some huge benefits.

The greatest thing about this exceptional woman is the fact that after achieving all this success, she has remained much grounded and has not forgotten the downtrodden, especially those that live in backgrounds like the one she came from. It is the reason why she founded Stree, a foundation and charity that helps women in the developing countries. Here is a summary of an interview Malini gave about this initiative.

She stated that she believed in women and that given the chance and opportunity, they are the ones capable of truly transforming the society. The aim of her initiative is to provide these women with opportunities such that they can afford food, shelter and an education for their children as this will transform the future.

When asked what her definition of success is, Malini states that being in a position to d what one loves and accomplishing it with a smile daily were her definition of success. She added that her biggest achievement so far was giving birth to her daughter and added that her daughter made her understand her deeper reasons for starting her foundation, and the true depth of the feeling she has always had, that the world should be made a better place.

She confided that the biggest challenge she had encountered wit the foundation was getting around the governments of the developing countries and their laws which more often than not, make investing and charity close to impossible.

Malini states that her biggest role model is Mother Teresa and that even though she may never accomplish as much as Mother Teresa did, she was always trying to make things better for those around her.
